The Herbert Gerisch Foundation created a skilful combination of historical architecture and contemporary art in a large park on Brachenfelder Straße on the Schwale.

Villa Wachholtz was built in 1903 for colored paper manufacturer Paul Ströhmer. It was a house of art from the start. Emil Nolde came to visit here because the owner of the house was a passionate collector of contemporary works of art. When he sold the house to his cousin Karl Wachholtz in 1925, he had a country house garden laid out in the spirit of Harry Maasz's garden art reform.

The entire ensemble was sensitively restored by the Gerisch Foundation. The couple Brigitte and Herber Gerisch have been designing a sculpture park for years that invites viewers to experience nature and art. New and spectacular works by internationally renowned artists continually move into “Arkadia”.

This outdoor collection is supplemented by changing exhibitions in the Villa Wachholtz and the Gerisch Gallery. 400 square meters of space are available for presentations of sculptures, paintings, graphics and video art.

With lectures, discussions, readings and concerts, Villa Wachholtz becomes a meeting place for those interested in culture.

The wedding room in the villa is ideal for civil weddings. The Harry Maasz Café invites you to linger with coffee, cake and small treats on the outdoor terrace in summer.
