Uwe Appold: In Praise of the Decimal System

(1998, steel, painted and covered with plastic film)

    Großflecken/Am Klostergraben, 24534 Neumünster

The number "100" forms the basis for this sculpture by sculptor Uwe Appold.

The occasion was the centenary of the Neumünster Savings Bank, but in this artwork, the value of the number takes a back seat to the form. Two rings and a rod

stand in space, are of different sizes and also tilted in different directions. These two simplest mathematical forms – circle and line – are not perceived as simple symbols in our everyday lives, but rather as charged with meaning, thus acquiring a statement and weight.

The three figures in the park are not connected to one another, but clearly relate to one another, changing their overall form with every step taken by the viewer. The spatial arrangement of the essentially flat symbols also reinforces their weight.

Uwe Appold calls his sculpture "In Praise of the Decimal System," alluding to the importance of the ten digits in our daily lives. With three simple digits, he describes a period of time (100 years) that is longer than most human lifetimes. However, these three symbols could also have a completely different meaning. They are not only part of the decimal system with its ten digits, but could just as easily be part of the binary system, which, with the two digits "1" and "0," forms the basis of our entire digital life.

The viewer is more likely to see two skewed zeros than the number '100'.

        Easily explained:

In 1871, the year the German Reich was founded, Germany introduced the first national currency in the decimal system: the mark and it has 100 pfennigs.

The last European countries to follow suit were 100 (!) years later, i.e. in 1971, Great Britain and Ireland.
