1995 was a time of great optimism. I was just 17 years old at the time. These were the years before the renewed success of Saxon viticulture and Saxon wine. The now well-known leading producers of Saxon wine quality were just starting out with small quantities. The renovation of the Schloss Wackerbarth winery was still unthinkable. The prince, who later regained Schloss Proschwitz, a former residence of the von Lippe family, was ridiculed for his plan to establish red wine production in the region. Old-school winemakers frowned, and some wine was poured into the spittoon or flower box at the wine bar in the Hoflößnitz estate with the comment "too sour." This was a central meeting place for Saxon winegrowers, where samples from the region were brought along, tasted, praised, and occasionally criticized.
