The Ilmenau Barrage is the southernmost barrage on the Lower Elbe and protects the lowlands of the Ilmenau and Luhe. Construction of the barrage began in 1969. The barrage was provisionally put into operation at the end of 1973, but was not completed until May 1976. The construction costs amounted to the equivalent of around 12 million euros (around 23.8 million DM).
