One of three walk-in wind turbines nationwide is located between Orsbach and Vetschau near Aachen. It is about 60 meters high and about 20 years old. The operators of the plant had the visitor platform built to educate them about wind power as renewable energy, when the prevailing opinion was that such plants had no business inland and belonged exclusively to the coast.

You have to walk up about 20 floors. This is not particularly exhausting, but it is easy to get a rotary worm on the spiral staircase. When the rotor head realigns itself in the wind, it is really loud, everything squeaks and rattles and one can get quite queasy in the narrow metal tower. The view from the top is spectacular, the rotor blades are close enough to touch, but one should be better free from vertigo, even if the ground is opaque. Everything is shaking pretty hard.
