A peculiarity in Fankel was that the flour required for the population could not be ground in a conventional mill, on a stream with a mill pond and mill wheel within the local limits, because the conditions for this were not available. For this reason, The Bishop and Elector of Trier, Johann von Isenburg, built a floating flour mill in the Moselle ford across from Fankel around 1550. This was in service until around 1812. It was auctioned off as spiritual property during the secularisation. ..."
