Around 90 ships pass through in both directions every day ...

The Dorsten double lock is one of the five locks on the Wesel-Datteln Canal. It overcomes a difference in altitude of nine meters. Both locks are operated from Datteln by the remote control center of the Duisburg-Meiderich water and economic authority. The large lock with lifting portals was built in 1931. It is 225 meters long, 12 meters wide and has a discharge depth of 2.80 meters. The capacity is 26,500 cubic meters. This means that two European ships can be passed through at the same time. A maximum of a simple push convoy based on a large motor cargo ship can use this lock. This is the largest type of ship permitted on the Wesel-Datteln Canal.

The small lock was built in 1968. It is 110 meters long, just as wide and deep as the large lock and has a capacity of 14,600 cubic meters. It is closed with a lifting gate on the upper water and a sliding gate on the lower water. Ship sizes up to large motor cargo ships can pass through this lock. A double lock takes about 50 minutes. On average, around 90 ships are handled at both locks each day. A total of nine employees ensure a smooth passage. The back pumping station of the lock can pump water uphill above the delivery head of 10.50 m. Like the other pumping stations at other locks of the Wesel-Datteln Canal, this serves to regulate the apex position in the “Dattelner Meer” and thus in the entire West German canal network. Four pumps are operated with 3,800 and one pump with 5,000 liters per second. A maximum of four pumps run simultaneously (see Wesel-Datteln Canal).
