After the "old lake" in the Middle Ages is increasingly silted up, it was drained during the time of Frederick the Great by the planting of numerous drainage ditches, which are still largely visible now. The area could thus be used as Mähwiese and cattle pasture. Rare plants and even pheasants and cranes have been able to live and breed undisturbed since the 1970s with the establishment of the bird sanctuary.
