Welgesheim is a small, pretty wine village in the Mainz-Bingen district, where the Wiesbach is crossed by the ancient Mainz military road to Bad Kreuznach. Nestled in a gentle wreath of vineyards, the 592 residents mostly work intensively on arable farming and viticulture on high-quality soil. Appealing quality wines grow on around 70 hectares of vineyards. (Status: 03/2021) The changing fortunes of the community are reflected in the many name changes. It was first mentioned in a document in 770 under the name Welligesheim. In 874 it appears under the name of Willengisheim and in 1178 as Wellengesheim. It appears under its present name around 1194, when Werner von Bolanden received the Welgesheim church treasury as a fief from Count Lon. Until the French Revolution, Welgesheim belonged to the Electoral Palatinate.
