The traditional recreational area around Lake Auensee in north-western Leipzig emerged from an amusement park founded over ninety years ago.

The scenic area with its Auwaldresten, the orchards and wetlands is still one of the most famous and popular destinations of Leipzig and their guests. It is located completely in the nature reserve "Leipziger Auwald".

Today you can find various opportunities for sports, games and entertainment in the area around the Auensee.

Half of the park is water surface and can be experienced with a boat in the true sense of the word. If you are cycling or walking, you will reach the Domholzschänke after 1.5 kilometers and reach the Rosental valley almost exclusively in the countryside through charming park landscapes.

The recreation area around Lake Auensee is only about 5 kilometers away from the city center. From the city center, the area is conveniently accessible via the B6.

Haus Auensee invites you to various events or to linger on the patio.

On Lake Auensee was the former Luna Park, the concrete bridge in the background was the transition for the former Luna Express, which made it possible for the building to circumnavigate the area.

The former Luna Park, a very nice destination. The only surviving Wilhelminian building is Haus Auensee. Unfortunately the lake has not been released for bathing since the seventies.

The current house Auensee is also a remnant of the Luna Park.
The lake itself was created by gravel excavation for the construction of Leipzig Central Station.

In 1908, the bank for land Leipzig south of the Elster planned a "large water system" with a park for amusement. In gravel dredging for the construction of the Leipzig Central Station by the company Willybald Hoffmann a suitable pit was created.

In 1913, this was flooded by the introduction of dog water, where it heavily silted. Then she got the name "Auensee".

The water quality of Auensees was from the end of the 1970s questionable, so that in 1979 even a bathing ban had to be imposed because of Salmonella danger, which exists to this day.

In 1914 an amusement park was created here, the Luna Park. This was forcibly auctioned in 1931. From him only the main restaurant was preserved, which was renamed in 1936 in Haus Auensee.

The Auensee is an approximately 12 hectare lake in the northwest of the city of Leipzig, in the district of Wahren. The lake is part of the floodplain forest, which extends all around and through Leipzig. (Source: Wikipedia)

Haus Auensee is also known to some. Concerts take place here regularly.

To the comment of Daniel Motion: From Auensee to Domholzschänke 1.5 km, that's not true. At about this distance was formerly the restaurant "The Wild Man", but burnt down decades ago. Today is at this place a forest playground. About 3 km from Auensee you will find the restaurant "Waldeslust".
The Domholzschänke is located about 9km to the east. The way there always leads along the Neue Luppe and is highly recommended. The Domholzschänke is currently closed. There should still be a snack.

Hello Lothar, a lot is true, but also some is not. The "savage" never burned down. It was torn down at night. The savage claimed that he had a power failure and did not want to let anyone in, but the light was on inside. Some of the fuses have blown.
The restaurant was not called "Waldeslust" but "Waldluft", but you will be forgiven, it was 45 years ago. :-)

The lake can be easily circumnavigated by the park railway. A detour is worthwhile.
