High Rigg Summit

High Rigg Summit

Recommended by 98 hikers

Nestled in the beautiful environs of St John’s in the Vale and surrounded by higher peaks, hikes to High Rigg take you to a charming, multi-topped ridge boasting wonderful views. One of the more diminutive of Lakeland’s Wainwright fells, it is nonetheless a grand objective and a wonderful place to explore, perfect for an afternoon family outing. With crags, little tarns and multiple summits, it is Lakeland in microcosm.

Sumptuous views for very little effort

At 1,171 feet (357 m), High Rigg, also known as Naddle Fell, is the Wainwright top for this small fell in the Lake District. I particularly love the view to the Skiddaw and Blencathra ranges from here. Overshadowed to the east by Clough Head and the long ridge that leads to Helvellyn, this fell has all of the views without anywhere near as much effort as some of the bigger mountains.

This was my fifth and last Wainwright of the day. A classic day out and High Rigg was the highlight of the day. Even though it's smaller it has more character with its steep narrow paths, undulating crest, stone walls, trees and cairned summit. I loved the view back down Thirlmere valley looking back at Great How. Stunning!

Stuck this one in at the end of the day. A quick one hour walk and a VERY fun slide down when icy!
