On June 14, 1985, the Schengen Agreement was signed on the passenger ship M.S. Marie Astrid. In the meantime, the Schengen Agreement has been ratified by 25 countries that make up the Schengen area. Europe's common borders are based on the Schengen Agreement.
On the Moselle Esplanade, 3 steel steles commemorate the signing of the Schengen Agreements in 1985 and 1990. The wine village of Schengen was chosen as the place for the signing of the agreements because it forms the border between France, Germany and the Benelux Economic Union (the first five signatories of the protocol).
Goethe drew a picture of Schengen as a place of freedom; Victor Hugo dreamed of his United States of Europe here.
