The 67 hectare Wooldse Veen is located in the south of Winterswijk. Despite the sensitivity of this natural area, the Veen has always remained freely accessible. The peat bites, some of which are owned by farmers, should remain accessible. But peat has not been cut here since the 1950s.
The area of the peat bites remains open thanks to the high water level. Volunteers and school children also help remove birch trees every year. The same rare plants and animals live in Wooldse Veen as in the neighboring Burlo-Vardingholter Venn on the German side. In the wet heath you can also find the rare lung gentian. The Wooldse Veen is not only important because of its heath and moor areas, but is also home to special birch quarry forests.
