According to old tradition, the Spreewald with its dilated tunnels and channels was created when the devil cocked his hell oxen in front of the plow and did not really want them back or forth. The devil got angry and drove the animals all over the fields. He was soon able to catch the animals again, but the field was completely destroyed. The remaining channels soon filled with water, from which the Spreewald emerged.The scientists, on the other hand, say that the Spreewald formed part of a glacial valley when the ice masses retreated after the last ice age. Everyone has to decide which version to believe more!
