The first weir at this point was already built in 1115 by the monks. Since then, it regulated the water flow from the water flowing from the Val di Chiana through the Canale Maestro into the Arno. Because of various floods and depressions of the channel, it was repeatedly destroyed or demolished and then repaired or rebuilt. Most of the visible remains of the building date back to the beginning of the 19th century. It was in operation until 1943 when it was destroyed by bombs and not rebuilt.
