The Elvira Gate or Elvira Arch (Báb Ilbím) was the access point to the Alhacaba and Albayzín from the Medina Elvira road, and that is where its name comes from.
The Puerta de Elvira, at the foot of Monaita, was joined by a stretch of wall that would ascend the Cuesta de Abarqueros. Its construction by the Zirid sultans dates from the beginning of the 11th century.
