The construction of the imperial palace began around 1240 on behalf of Emperor Frederick II, but was broken off around 1250 after his early death.
On the site of today's castle, the fortress of the Alberti di Prato was built in the 11th century, which was almost completely destroyed in 1107 during the siege by the troops of Mathilde von Canossa.

The Castello dell'Imperatore - the imperial castle in Prato - is the only example of Hohenstaufen architecture in northern and central Italy. It was built by Riccardo da Lentini between 1237 and 1248 on the orders of Emperor Friedrich II.
The castle was inhabited by his governor in Tuscany, who was tasked with protecting the road that connected the Holy Roman Empire with southern Italy and Sicily.
