Local recreation area for all Berliners. Joggers, children, unfortunately also drugs...

The Hasenheide is a park of around fifty hectares in the Berlin district of Neukölln on the border with Kreuzberg. The name of the park goes back to the use of the area as a rabbit enclosure from 1678 onwards. The Great Elector went hunting here.

On June 19, 1811, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn opened the first gymnastics area in Prussia here. The Jahn monument at the northern entrance to the park still reminds us today of the so-called gymnastics father and that the German gymnastics movement began here. In 1886, a duel took place here between the officer Armand Léon Baron von Ardenne and the judge Emil Hartwich (see Theodor Fontane's novel Effi Briest).

The park has an open-air cinema, an animal enclosure, a mini golf course, a rose garden, several playgrounds and a dog park. In the middle of the park there is a 1950s-style kiosk called the Hasenschänke. In 2006, a sports area was opened opposite the Columbiadamm summer pool, which includes a course with various obstacles for skateboarders, a place for roller hockey and practice baskets for basketball. Hasenheide is also popular with recreational soccer players because of its large open spaces.

Hasenheide is a focal point of Berlin's drug trade (especially cannabis as an intoxicant). The Berlin police, which follows up on specific tips and reports from the public to combat drug trafficking, point out, however, that a complete ban on cannabis trafficking would lead to a migration to surrounding, difficult-to-control areas.
