The Old Town Hall is an eye-catcher in Oberstdorf, especially with its painted facade. The pictures are reminiscent of very important events in the history of Oberstdorf.

Built in the 14th century as a dance hall, later used as a town hall and now a mountain show

The old and new town halls stand next to each other on the east side of the market square.

The place for the town hall has been next to the church for hundreds of years. It used to be called “Gmuindhüs”. Here the “village leader” met the “district champions”. They made sure that the “village rules” were adhered to. The tax money and documents were in the “Gmuindstrucke”. Criminals were locked in the "Blockhiesle" (fool's house) in the basement until they came to court. All kinds of goods were weighed with the large “scales”.
On the east side you can see the Oberstdorf coat of arms, a white horse on a red field. Below, a wall painting by the Oberstdorf artist Walter Kallot shows the awarding of market rights in 1495 and the first railway with spa guests in 1888.
An exhibition about our mountains is now housed on the ground floor of the old town hall. The local council meeting room is still on the first floor.
