    Mountaineering

Very beautiful panoramic mountain with a view of the Illertal and the Allgäu Alps.
Ideally, you get up early, especially in the season, as it gets quite crowded up here.

Mountaineering boots, sure-footedness and appropriate physical condition are prerequisites for this beautiful, but also demanding summit.

The hike to the Rubihorn is well signposted and marked, but requires surefootedness and a head for heights, especially from Gaisalpsee, where the trail becomes increasingly steep and exposed in places. Some sections are secured with wire ropes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main starting points for hiking to Rubihorn Gipfel?

The most common starting point is from the parking area in Reichenbach, near Oberstdorf. This route typically leads past the Gaisalpe and the refreshing Unterer Gaisalpsee before ascending to the summit. Alternatively, hikers can begin from the middle station of the Nebelhornbahn, "Vordere Seealpe," which shortens the initial climb but still presents a challenging ascent to the summit.

Is the Rubihorn Gipfel hike suitable for beginners or families with children?

The hike to Rubihorn Gipfel is generally considered moderately difficult to challenging, requiring good physical condition, sure-footedness, and a head for heights. While some sections are secured with wire ropes, the terrain becomes steep and exposed, especially from Gaisalpsee onwards. For beginners or families with young children, it might be too demanding. There are other, easier trails in the Allgäu Alps that might be more suitable for a family outing.

Are dogs allowed on the trails to Rubihorn Gipfel?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trails to Rubihorn Gipfel. However, due to the challenging and sometimes exposed terrain, including sections with steel cables, it's crucial that your dog is well-behaved, accustomed to mountain hiking, and kept on a leash for safety. Be mindful of other hikers and wildlife, and ensure your dog can handle the strenuous ascent and descent.

What are the specific challenges of hiking Rubihorn Gipfel in winter?

Winter hiking to Rubihorn Gipfel presents significant challenges beyond the summer season. The trails can be covered in deep snow and ice, making them treacherous and requiring specialized equipment like snowshoes, crampons, and an ice axe. The risk of avalanches, especially in gullies like the Bachtelrinne, is high. Visibility can be poor, and temperatures drop significantly. It is only recommended for experienced mountaineers with proper winter gear and knowledge of alpine conditions.

Are there any cafes or restaurants near the Rubihorn trailheads?

While there aren't many direct cafes right at the trailheads, the Gaisalpe, located along the popular route from Reichenbach, offers a place for refreshments. Additionally, the nearby town of Oberstdorf provides a wide range of cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options where hikers can refuel before or after their ascent.

Can you swim in the Gaisalpsee near Rubihorn Gipfel?

The Gaisalpsee (Unterer Gaisalpsee) is a beautiful glacier lake located along the hiking route to Rubihorn Gipfel and serves as an ideal spot for a break. While it's a refreshing sight, the area is part of the "Naturschutzgebiet Allgäuer Hochalpen" (Allgäu High Alps Nature Reserve). Activities like wild swimming are generally discouraged or prohibited to protect the delicate alpine ecosystem. It's best to enjoy the lake's beauty from its shores.

What is the elevation of Rubihorn Gipfel and how long does a typical hike take?

Rubihorn Gipfel stands at an elevation of 1,957 meters (approximately 6,421 feet). A typical hike from the parking area in Reichenbach, via Gaisalpe and Unterer Gaisalpsee, usually takes around three and a half hours for the ascent. The total duration, including descent and breaks, can easily be 6-8 hours, depending on your pace and chosen route.

What kind of gear is essential for hiking Rubihorn Gipfel?

Given the moderately difficult to challenging terrain, essential gear includes sturdy mountaineering boots with good ankle support and grip. Hikers should also carry appropriate layers of clothing for changing mountain weather, plenty of water, snacks, a first-aid kit, sun protection, and a map or GPS device. Trekking poles can be very helpful on steep sections.

Are there any historical or geological points of interest on the Rubihorn?

Yes, the Rubihorn has notable historical and geological features. A significant rockfall occurred on its north side on July 9, 1987, with between 10,000 and 15,000 cubic meters of debris tumbling down. The marks of this powerful natural event are still visible today. More recently, a rockfall in September 2025 on the west side damaged a path section, leading to temporary closures. These events highlight the dynamic geology of the Allgäu Alps.

How crowded does Rubihorn Gipfel get, especially during peak season?

Rubihorn Gipfel is a popular destination, especially during peak season (summer and early autumn) and on weekends. Visitor tips frequently mention that it can get quite crowded. To avoid the busiest times and enjoy a more serene experience, it is highly recommended to start your hike early in the morning. Arriving before mid-morning can also help secure parking.

Are there any alternative or advanced routes to the Rubihorn summit?

While the main routes are well-established, experienced hikers looking for advanced options might explore variations or link the Rubihorn with other peaks in the Daumen Group, such as the Geisalphorn. The route starting from the Nebelhornbahn's middle station, while shorter in initial ascent, is still steep and demanding with scree and rocky steps. Always research and prepare thoroughly for any advanced routes, as they may involve more exposure and technical challenges.
