The fact that the patron saint of the church is an apostle, St. Matthew
suggests that the first church building dates back to earlier times,
perhaps from the missionary epoch of the Lech region by St.
Magnus around 750. Written records of the church are first available from 1450, but it does not show whether it was made of wood or stone. Although the church was small, it met the needs of the few villagers. However, that changed when the miracles associated with the statue of Our Lady of Kinsau from 1708 gave rise to the pilgrimage to Kinsau. In 1712-14 the church was rebuilt and significantly larger; the consecration of the church was carried out on April 19, 1714 by Auxiliary Bishop of Augsburg Johann Casimir. The high altar was dedicated to the patron saint of Matthew, the left side altar to St. Anna and the right one to St. Jacob. The altarpieces for this are no longer available today.
