The Madeleine Church stands in front of the Palace of Justice on Place des Prêcheurs, which was built by René von Anjou in the 15th century and was the center of public and social life before the opening of the Cours Mirabeau. The church was built in 1691-1703 by Laurent Vallon on the site of the former Dominican convent Les Prêcheurs, founded in 1274. The facade was not completed, but was given a monumental veneer by Revoil in 1855-1860.
On the southern outside and in the nave there are still medieval elements that were reused in the Vallon project: the side aisles, buttresses and gable walls. This church museum contains works by numerous artists who lived in Aix, including the extraordinary altarpiece of the Annunciation from 1444.
