Wied Valley

Highlight • River

Nice, quiet route along the Wied, either with a racing bike on the road, as a MTB or gravel cyclist on the embankment or on the Wieswanderweg.

Hochscheider Bach Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Here it goes through a beautiful valley below the Bärenkopf, always along the stream.
But be careful with the area with the dead spruce trees. A branch can fall down …

An idyllic spot along the Pfaffenbach stream, and the House of Nature run by the ANUAL Association (environmental and nature conservation) is also worth a visit!

A small highlight in Rhineland-Palatinate. The almost continuous cycle path is really great.

Not only the Wiedtal itself is worth a tour. From there you can turn off at several points up to the Westerwaldhöhen and from there you can ski down charming routes with a great view back into the Wiedtal. It's a bit more strenuous, but it's easy to do, especially for e-bikers, and it's almost a must.

<< Cable car from the cap over the Masbachtal past Rahms to Wiedmühle >> "In 1883, basalt quarrying began in Roßbach/Wied am Häubchen. The basalt quarry achieved a significant boost when a cable car was built between 1926 and 1928 for faster transport and for more efficient processing of the stone material. A cable car was built over 4.5 kilometers from the cap over the MASBACHTAL past Rahms to Wiedmühle, to the next possible siding of the Westerwaldbahn. The largest span (distance between two supports) was over the Masbachtal and was 1,040 meters. An unusual building for the time. The construction of the cable car made the braking track to Roßbach superfluous. The cable car was actually only intended to transport goods. But there was also passenger transport. This quarry gave work and bread to many people in the surrounding communities of Breitscheid and Roßbach. The job was dangerous and exhausting. As early as 1941/1942, basalt mining at the cap was stopped again. The crushing plant and the cable car were consequently dismantled again in 1941/1942." The stream has dug deep into the canyon-like valley. Especially in summer when it is hot it is pleasant to hike.

A beautiful and very varied tour with many highlights. Two Giofel crosses, single trails, great views and predominantly natural ground. The tour has everything a hiker could desire. She is highly recommended!

Part of the Wäller "Bärenkopp" tour leads along the Hochscheider Bach. The stream is very natural, has some natural accumulations with small "waterfalls". It is very pleasant to walk next to the happily gurgling little stream.

The Wiedradweg is really beautiful! Not boring, but partly on forest paths, gravel paths, unfortunately also longer road sections on quiet country roads. The Wied always more or less in view, bridges, tunnels, recommended!

The name of the Pfaffenbach is derived from the Heisterbach monks (priests), who had some estates in Neustadt an der Wied from the middle of the 13th to the end of the 18th century as well as pastoral work in the parish there. In 1254, Countess Mechthild von Sayn donated the church in Neustadt with patronage and tithes as well as the tithes from her farms and estates in the parish of Neustadt to the hospital of Heisterbach Abbey.[5] The monks' path from Heisterbach to Neustadt led along the Pfaffenbach. A bridge over the Pfaffenbach between the villages of Hüngsberg (district of Windhagen) and Prangenberg (district of Neustadt (Wied)) bears the name "Pfaffensteg". https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pfaffenbach_(Wied)

After cycling through rather idyllic meadows and forests along the Wied, the massive rock and the concrete terraces are a stark contrast.

Unfortunately, the Wied cycle path does not only lead over cycle paths or the disused railway line, but also a longer section over the roadway of a busy country road. Pity! In September 2021, a section was also closed due to construction work and the diversion was not clearly marked.

In some sections (S2), good tires are required, as it was made accessible for maintenance purposes with coarse gravel after sewage work a few years ago! Otherwise beautiful natural valley, especially in the upper reaches very close to nature!
