Lake Neusiedl cycle path — three days, two countries, one lake

Bike Touring Collection by
Neusiedler See Radweg

High reeds, red-white striped lighthouses and a stiff breeze sweeping over the undulating water. As white sailboats dance on the water, colorful kites blow in the wind, while an infinite number of vine plants stretch across the horizon like a garland to a new world.

The ambience at Lake Neusiedl is almost similar to that at the sea. Europe's second largest steppe lake and Austria's largest lake is an inland waterway embedded in the flat countryside on the Hungarian border. The Lake Neusiedl cycle path runs 120 kilometres around the "Lacke", as the locals call it. You will cycle through Hungary when making your way around the southern tip.

We have divided the route around the lake into three stages. On this three-day Tour, which starts and ends at the station in Neusiedl am See, you can enjoy the well-developed cycle path and the many highlights along the entire route. Above all, you can expect a lot of nature with an interesting animal population, which you can watch from the countless observation towers.

Thanks to the region's excellent infrastructure, there are several campsites and other accommodation options available to you on the way, and in the restaurants around the lake, you can indulge yourself with good wine from the region.

Although the whole route is flat and has almost no gradients, you should consider the wind at the lake, which can prove quite the challenge at times. If that's why you'd rather shorten your journey, we'll show you an alternative route at the end of the Collection that will take you across the lake by ferry.

The Lake Neusiedl cycle path is recommended in the brochure "Deutschland per Rad entdecken" by the ADFC (German Cyclist's Association) and is ranked as a quality cycle route with five stars. More information (in German): adfc.de/artikel/radurlaub-als-sternstunde

Easy bike ride. Great for any fitness level. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels. The tour includes crossing by ferry.

On a short 14 kilometers you can cycle and take the ferry from Apetlon to Mörbisch am See. You can choose this alternative if you want to avoid driving around the southern tip of Lake Neusiedl and the detour through Hungary. Due to the shortness of the route, it is also possible to combine them with the third stage. On the way to the landing stage of the ferry you cycle through the beautiful flat landscape, which is so characteristic for the Neusiedler See and you pass the seaside resort Neusiedl. Here's a stopover to cool off in the refreshing waters of the lake and lie on the beach for a while. With the ferry, which leaves every half an hour, it goes over the lake to Mörbisch am See, where the stage destination of the tour is already. Here you can either stay overnight or attach the last part of the tour and continue by bike to Neusiedl am See.
