Abetone to Lake Brasimone – Alta Via dei Parchi (part 2)

The second section of the Alta Via dei Parchi is much shorter than the first and can be tackled over a long weekend. Three medium-length stages of increasing difficulty take you from the most beautiful places in the Modena Apennines to the foothills of the Bologna Apennines. The Adriatic Sea is still far away, but slowly approaching. If you missed the first part of the trip, from Berceto to Abetone, catch up here: komoot.com/collection/2451977.

This second part is the last to offer panoramic trails at over 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) as you follow one of the most beautiful ridges in the Apennines. The next section discovers the less elevated but no less fascinating Bolognese Apennines. Between Mount Cimone and Corno alle Scale, there’s no shortage of high-altitude scenery. These places, which have always been cultural crossroads, are an inexhaustible source of intrigue and surprise.

As with the first section of the Alta Via, this is a high-mountain adventure that shouldn’t be underestimated. The weather is extremely changeable, alternating between extreme heat and bitter cold. The winds can also change rapidly. What's more, it can be difficult to stock up on food and water outside the refuges along the way.

Much of the Collection takes place on stony ground, grassy meadows and land soaked by rain or streams, making waterproof hiking boots with good grip essential. A fairly large rucksack (50 L) will also mean you have ample room for clothes, supplies and all the essentials you need to take with you.

Each stage ends close to at least one accommodation facility. However, as these are high mountain refuges, they may not be open all year round so it’s essential to book a bed well in advance. It’s also possible to wild camp and bivouac under the stars but, as you’ll be crossing national parks, check the list of authorised areas. Enjoy your journey adventure on the Alta Via dei Parchi.
