A short distance from the largest and most famous cities of northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region lies a long, unforgettable route, extending mostly above 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) altitude through remote and wild landscapes, buffeted by summer winds and winter snow. The Alta Via dei Parchi, bordering Tuscany, offers 360° panoramic views over two regions, starting from Berceto, the ‘mountain town closest to the Tyrrhenian Sea’, and concluding near the Adriatic.

Covering over 480 kilometres (290 mi) in 27 stages with an elevation gain of nearly 23,000 metres (75,500 ft), the official route ( ambiente.regione.emilia-romagna.it/en/parchi-natura2000/protected-areas/the-alta-via-dei-parchi/stages/the-stages?set_language=en ) is a month-long adventure. You can also tackle it as individual parts; it’s worth enjoying the spectacular beauty one stretch at a time.

In this Collection, I’ve created an itinerary which follows the official route. The first segment leads between the most beautiful municipalities in Parma: Berceto to the renowned ski resort of Abetone in Modena. It’s challenging but not impossible. Don’t underestimate the first section of the Alta Via dei Parchi, it’s a high-mountain adventure and temperatures can be low, even in summer. Prepare for unpredictable weather changes, limited food and water resupply points beyond the shelters, and the necessity of reliable gear, including sturdy boots and a spacious rucksack. The trail winds through stony terrain, grassy meadows, and wet areas, so you need grippy and comfortable walking shoes.

Each stage of the entire Alta Via dei Parchi finishes at accommodation, often high mountain refuges. Check that they’re open and book in advance, as they’re not open year-round. You can also pitch a tent and wild camp in designated areas. Find out more (in Italian): shorturl.at/eEPYZ.

The Alta Via dei Parchi promises breathtaking moments with unexpected views and challenging terrains that’ll etch themselves onto your memory. Some sections may be diverted by small landslides and you could find short distances covered in snow, even in summer. Paolo Cognetti's writes in his book ‘The Eight Mountains’: ‘only snow, ridges, streams, lakes and pastures. The mountains are a way of living life. One foot in front of the other, silence, time, distance.’

Wishing you a fantastic adventure along the Alta Via dei Parchi.
