Temples in and around Shanghai

Collection by Gordon

As I enjoy my endeavors in Shanghai and into neighboring Jiangsu and Zhejiang, I come across temples that make as great waypoints and sights along a tour - bike tour or road cycling.

I keep adding them to this collection for an overview what is out there and what I have seen so far :-)

  5. Zhuangyan Temple (庄严寺) is located on the banks of Dazheng River (大蒸港) in Qingpu District (青浦区) of Shanghai. It was built more than 700 years ago during the Yuan Dynasty. The temple is also home to two old Ginko trees (I guess they will look fabulous in autumn).

  6. As of 3 October 2023, the pagoda is under construction. Entrance to the temple grounds was RMB10. The bao’an was cool with me walking my bike inside and leaving just inside the gate, so that I could walk around.

There is also Gingko Tree growing behind the temple, said to be more than 1,000 years old.

  10. If you have already cycled all the way here, then going down this little road is a real treat. When entering through the gate at the northern end you feel enchanted by the tree cover and the sculptures standing left and right as you go down the road.

  14. Donglin Temple is a famous temple in Zhujing Town, Jinshan District of Shanghai - and probably unlike most temples you will find in this area. If I recall correctly, it was built in 1308 during the Yuan Dynasty.

Its main gate is about 20m wide and 15m in height and is topped with marble statues and five golden lotus flowers. The main building leans onto an artificial hill, that from a distance looks like a giant Buddha.

Over its 700 years it been abandoned, damaged and rebuilt repeatedly. It was re-opened in 2007 after a major reconstruction.

  15. The Xiahai Temple is one of the lesser known temples in Shanghai. Therefore not overcrowded but still very interesting. Be sure to try the noodle soup in the temple restaurant. As always with fresh pasta and delicious mushroom.

  16. The Jade Buddha Temple was built in 1882 to house two Buddha statues imported from Myanmar. A further Buddha statue donated by Singapore is also located at this temple.

During a reconstruction and re-decoration project in 2014 the temple main hall and statues were moved north by approx. 30m.
