EUROPE MOVES!

What could be better than an adventure using the most relaxed means of transport of all? Cycling! In this Collection, MEP Bernd Lange takes you on eight fascinating cycling Tours of Hamburg's surrounding countryside, where you’ll discover all kinds of interesting places related to culture, education and industrial history. There are fascinating stopovers in store too, such as an old tin smelter and a honey factory, both of which have been converted into cultural centres. For those who prefer to walk, check out the two hikes on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath.

Supported by the European Union, there are innovative projects at each of these sites. All kinds of events take place, such as literary readings, dance workshops and theatre performances. You can learn about advanced energy production using solar technology and other extraordinary, groundbreaking research projects of the Fraunhofer Institute in Hamburg.

You’ll head through the middle of beautiful Hamburg, past famous places like the Außenalster lakes and cross the scenic harbour with all its sights. You'll pass under the Elbe River via an old tunnel and work your way south of the city into its enchanting, vibrant surroundings. You might be surprised just how close the busy port and the contrasting quiet idyll of natural areas like Seevetal are to each other.

All Tours start and end near train stations, which gives you a degree of flexibility. Hamburg has an excellent public transport system, which you can use to your advantage.

From the city of Hamburg you can cycle along the Elbe through the lovely Altes Land to Stade, which is well worth seeing and has been beautified even further in recent years with the help of EU funding. The route when the fruit trees are in bloom is particularly beautiful. But you can also relax wonderfully

On this approximately 60-kilometer bike tour, everything revolves around the different types of water around Hamburg. From the Elbe with its access to the sea, further across the Alster to quiet moors and finally to the renatured Elbe tributaries Dove Elbe and Gose Elbe. You first cycle through the city

The fertile meadows around the Elbe have been settled since primeval times - megalithic stone tombs and sacrificial sites still bear witness to this today. Since the Stone Age people have not built from rough boulders, but along this bike tour there is something to discover from 4,000 years of "building

On this bike tour, historical buildings are given a special focus - especially if they are open to the public today and are still in use. You can find the places that you head for on a long loop south of Hamburg. Since there is a lot to see along the way, you can easily split the route over two days

CLEVER Cities is a project to redesign cities and communities in a way that is close to nature - and all this with the involvement of the population, who can help shape the individual projects themselves. Cities in Europe, South America and China are participating. In Germany it is Hamburg's Neugraben

The second tour takes you from Veddel up to the countryside. With a length of almost 50 kilometers, it demands a bit more stamina from you. Fortunately, the area around Hamburg is pretty flat, which makes things a lot easier. It starts at the same place where you ended the first tour, right in front

At the gates of Hamburg lies the Fischbeker Heide, a real hiking paradise. Sandy, winding paths lead you through a picturesque landscape. The heather sheep graze on the rolling hills. It smells of blueberries. At the right time of year, the blooming heather and the yellow broom turn the heather into

  • The Hanstedter Töps is a plateau within the heather. In the varied and beautiful landscape there is a historic sheepfold, which is to be preserved as a cultural heritage with funds from the European Union's ERDF program.

  • The highest treetop path in northern Germany can be found in the Lüneburg Heath. The walkways run up to 22 meters above the ground and open up completely new perspectives on the wonderful landscape. If you want to go even higher, an elevator will take you to the 45 meter high observation tower. From here you really have everything in view.

  • If you have the time and feel like taking a detour, you will find over 100 animal species in the Black Mountains Wildlife Park, including an open-air enclosure and cuddly zoo. The zoo is open all year round from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and has its own restaurant. From the 45-meter-high observation tower you can not only see the entire area of the wildlife park, but in good visibility you can also see the Alte Land, the Elbe and the Blankeneser Elbe slope.
