Up and down Lee Penn from my front door - pointlessly summiting on first and last laps - for the Type 2 Fun Virtual Backyard Ultra. Haven't run like that in a while - going to hurt tomorrow! Thanks everyone who joined in :)

Last day! I was really frustrated to wake up and discover I had missed my alarm, and now Andrea (2nd place woman) was only 9km behind me. I panicked and got moving quickly as possible, and didn't stop for the rest of the ride to the finish. Not even to pee or put on sunscreen! I knew even a basic mechanical would cost me the race, but I had to ride as hard as I've ever done before. My poor bike. The final km's into the finish were sandy and very frustrating, and I found it hard to give Nelson a hug when I finally made it.
Delighted with my result and happy to be done :)

Slow start in the long dark hours this morning. Beautiful sunrise got me going, however, and I reached the off-route resupply of Tagmout with a few other riders for double orders of omelets/coffees. Did a group rideout up the Old Colonial Piste, which was stunning but challenging. The gnarly descent in total darkness was a little worrying but got down to Issafen for yet another double omelets/coffees session with lots of other riders. Night ride on a rocky riverbed was slow but beautiful. Period really slowed me down today and had to try not to be negative about that, surrounded only by male riders who would never been handicapped this way!

Perhaps one of my hardest days in the race. Brutal heat/headwind got to me on an exposed section of the course before CP2. Reaching CP2 was a great milestone, but my period started (not expected!) which was a real problem when I couldn't find anything to buy for that. Left the checkpoint with Jesse and had an enjoyable night ride but got too tired too early and slept on a riverbed. Reaching CP2 always feels like breaking the back of the race, and time to turn up the gears, but I just didn't have it physically now.

Really frustrating start to the day, with lots of walking on rocky riverbeds - mentally frustrating when it's flat! I had half a bath at the oasis as I arrived well before the cafe opened, then carried my bike up the longest staircase ever. Met Lian/media car in Ait Saoun, and dead devices (thanks to dynamo not working when I'm walking!), mega heat, and the first sight of other AMR peeps gives me all the excuse I need to go for 2x omelette/coffee break. Perhaps I stayed too long, but the rest was rejuvenating and it really was too hot outside.
The afternoon was baking hot, but I enjoyed the camaraderie of other riders until I reached Taznakht just on time for dinner with a group of male riders. I was relieved to have them to sit with in the male-only cafe. As sun set town got a little uncomfortable, so I rode out into another beautiful starry sky above the desert. It was really windy, probably the only weather condition ever hit on the race!

My goal in Day 1 was to ride well and try to reach CP1 by nightfall, which I managed by over an hour. Getting the first 4000m of climbing done in less than 10 hours was great for my confidence, and I left CP1 stoked to ride this race. I gave in to sleepy eyes in the middle of the night for a few hours, pretty gutted at the time with my low mileage for a first day, but looking back it was a great start!
