According to legend, shepherds found a statue of the Virgin Mary on the bank of the Beerze on 24 June 1406, or according to another story in the Beerze, floating against the current. The figurine was placed in the hollow of an oak. In the following night, residents of the Beerzen are said to have removed the statue from the oak. Inexplicably, the statue was back the next day. From that moment on, the worship of Mary arose at that place with an annual procession on the Saturday before St. John the Baptist (24 June) and a wooden chapel was built. After the destruction of this chapel at the end of the 16th century, Johannes Daems, canon of St. Peter's Chapter, had a stone chapel built in 1606 out of gratitude for his healing. The chapel was demolished in 1649 by order of the States General. The worship of the Virgin Mary on the spot where the chapel had stood, however, continued. In 1854 the current chapel was built on the foundations of the old chapel. In 1906 the chapel was expanded with building materials from the tower of St. Peter's Church that collapsed in 1904. Among other things, the four columns at the entrance of the chapel come from the choir of St. Peter's Church. In the stained glass windows, made by Jos van Doremolen in 1947, representations from the life of Maria can be seen. The stained glass windows in the front part, made by Albert Troost (ca.1950) and Jacques Slegers, remind us of the Second World War. The original 15th century wooden statue of Our Lady is located in St. Peter's Church. A replica has been placed in the chapel. (Source: openmonumentendag.nl)

Walking tour through nature reserves Oisterwijkse Bossen and Vennen, the Oude Hondsberg and Ter Braakloop. The hike starts in the immediate vicinity of the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen nature reserve and passes some beautiful fens such as the Kolkven, Diaconieven and the Brandven. The walk then goes through the Oude Hondsberg, a beautiful, varied forest area through which the Reusel brook flows. After leaving the Oude Hondsberg one passes through the Ter Braakloop nature reserve, originally a drifting sand area planted with pine trees. The current management measures make the area an attractive, varied forest area. In this area, the Pierenberg is a small sand drift from which the name of this route is derived. After leaving the Ter Braakloop forest area, a section of the Reusel brook is followed. 85% of this hike is unpaved.
