Kessel Boat Landing at Königssee

Highlight • Rest Area

Kessel can be reached by boat from Schönau. It is a demand stop, so be sure to tell the driver (boatswain) that you want to get off in Kessel.
From Kessel it goes in serpentine steeply up to the Gotzentalalm, and from there you can go back to Schönau, or even the Gotzenalm high.

The small pilgrimage church and the Königssee are inseparable. On summer weekends countless tourists stream through the tiny village to visit the church in front of this phenomenal panorama and take photos. If the hustle and bustle is too much for you, you can just start right on your hike in the surrounding mountains.

Lake Königssee

Highlight • Lake

The Königssee lies like a fjord between steeply rising gray rock faces. The almost 2,000 meter high walls are so steep that they plunge seamlessly into the water of the lake. Since there is no path along the shore, the fastest and most promising way for you is across the lake with one of the excursion boats. In order to protect the water quality and nature, all boats used are operated exclusively with electric motors or physical power.

Boathouses on Lake Königssee

Highlight • Structure

Boatyard Koenigssee:
The part of the company with the highest turnover employs around 80 people. All 19 passenger boats have been powered purely electrically since 1909. The electricity for this comes from the batteries in the hull of the boat. In order for the boats to be able to operate for a whole day, the batteries must be charged overnight.

During the winter months, the employees in the driving service work in their trained professions as boat builders, joiners, carpenters, painters, electricians, saddlers or locksmiths. Then the boats are repaired or rebuilt. The boats, which are predominantly made of wood, but also the 16 huts covered with wooden shingles require a high financial and personnel repair effort. However, this is often used in order to preserve the characteristics and charm of the lake in the national park.

The train service at Königssee is all year round.

Königssee Boat Pier

Highlight • Rest Area

From here by boat to the Saletalm or St. Bartholomä. The ships stop in the middle of the lake and play the echo for the passengers with the trumpet.

The lake is just awesome. You have to look at the reflections on the Obersee. But take one of the first ferries 😉.
