Covering an area of 65,000 square meters, the mighty Veste Oberhaus is one of the largest castles in Europe - and in excellent condition. Since 1932, the Veste is owned by the city of Passau and since then an exciting museum has been established here. On the one hand, you can dive deep into the history of the city and the castle. There are also changing art exhibitions. In addition, the visit is worth it for the beautiful view of Passau, which you can enjoy from the walls.

St. Paul Parish Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The parish church St. Paul is the oldest parish church of Passau.
The first church was built around 1050 to St. Consecrated to Paul. After the destruction of fires in 1512 and 1662, the current building was built in 1678.

At the Paulusbogen, the northern gate to the old town, a flight of steps leads up to the cream-and-pink, single-towered church. The builder is Carlo Antonio Carlone. The original, very flat spire of the 17./18. Century was replaced in the second half of the 19th century by a high pointed helmet. This was demolished in 1950 because of alleged disrepair and rebuilt only about one-third high. Since then, the tower after the cathedral is only the second highest church tower Passau.

In the interior, the black gilded altars and the equally colored pulpit stand out against the bright walls. The large high altar from around 1700 bears a painting by Franz Werner Tamm depicting the beheading of the Apostle Paul. The side altars and the pulpit were made between 1678 and 1689. The painting Beweinung Christi (1689) by Johann Michael Rottmayr. The economical stucco was not installed until 1909.
