Grandmother Rocks

The plateau on which the Kasteler Felsenpfad dream loop runs consists of a horizontally deposited layer of rocks from the geological series of Buntsandstein. These continental deposits alternate between rocky sand and coarse gravel layers. The gravelly deposits were formed during times of higher water levels and associated higher flow velocities. In the layer sequences there are also less hard rocks such as claystone or transitional forms between sandstone and claystone. These can be weathered out more easily and the harder layers remain. This is how impressive shapes were created.

During the formation of the sandstone, easily soluble aluminum sulfate was incorporated. However, this salt destroys the rock. Wind and weather remove the decomposed areas, leaving behind characteristic honeycomb-shaped structures. This process is therefore called honeycomb weathering.

Fox Den (Devil's Wall)

Highlight • Cave

"The" Fuchsbau "is an artificial, accessible, cellar-like cavity in the area of the Teufelsmauer. It is located directly on the roadside east of the thunderstorm grotto. The small cave was created in 1934 as a so-called "emergency work" by the unemployed as a hiking destination. In bad weather, hikers can use the burrow as a shelter.
You get into the burrow through a narrow entrance. A spiral staircase leads into the depths, where a narrow corridor connects. The cave offers space for several people inside. There is a bench with a panoramic window opposite, which allows a less spectacular view of the forest.

The name for the artificial cavity was borrowed from the hunter's language. The name refers to the construction of the red foxes with access tunnel (tube) and living space (boiler). Only the escape tubes common with wild animals are missing in the man-made "burrow". The red fox burrows do not have such a beautiful window in the living room ”👹🤠

Teufelsmauer – Hamburger Wappen and Grotto

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

Very nice tour from Grandfather Rock to the Hamburg coat of arms. The brave ones take the path above the Devil's Wall; it is more comfortable to walk along the foot of the Devil's Wall.

Devil's Wall Ridge Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Devil's Wall in the Harz is one of the most spectacular rock towers in the Harz. The 20 kilometer long sandstone wall with its striking individual rocks is not even in the heart of the Harz Mountains, but in the Harz foreland. The bizarre rock formations were created by erosion and the removal of softer rock layers and are up to 20 meters high. On an exploration tour along the Kammweg you can swing over high steps, squeeze through narrow gorges and hold on to iron railings here and there - of course not without stopping in between to enjoy the grotesque rocks towering in front of us and the great views. With the Hamburg coat of arms, three prominently protruding rocks, the Harz even with a little imagination is reminiscent of the Three Peaks of the Dolomites.

Hiking sticks are useful. Surefootedness and a head for heights are required on the hike.
