Tuesday 6th October 2026 - Grenoside Woods and Wharncliffe
Once again we were lucky with the weather. Early October and it was dry warm and sunny. This was especially pleasing because it was the first time that Roz had led a walk for us and it helped everything go really well. Twelve of us met in the parking area just off Woodhead Road on the outskirts of Sheffield. The area is popular with dog walkers and cyclists and sometimes the car park can get busy but today it was fine. Roz briefed us and we set off into the adjacent woods and began a long and fairly gentle descent through the trees. On reaching the path that runs sort of north west alongside the railway track we swung right and followed a nice wide path for a mile or so. The coffee stop was al fresco in a lovely sunny spot beside the path. Eventually we turned right again and went more steeply up to get onto Wharncliffe Crags. Roz had promised us great views overlooking the valley to accompany our lunch and she did not let us down. It was splendid. After lunch the walk was mostly along the top of the crags on a path that wended its way through the bracken. This and some of the surrounding trees had started to turn to their autumn colours. They looked good it the late season sunshine. The last section of the walk took us back into Grenoside Woods and up a long steady slope back to the cars. The whole walk had been smashing. A bit of a surprise to some of us to find such a nice and varied walk so close in to Sheffield. We should go there more often. Thanks to Roz for finding the walk and for leading it and to her and Sharon for some of the photos. CP
