Route: Nairobi - Nakuru - Kericho - Kisumu - Kakamega

ABOUT MY RIDE TODAY

Route: Nairobi - Nakuru - Kericho - Kisumu - Kakamega

It has been more than two years since I last cycled to Western. We had cycled via Kapsabet to Chavakali for Jusper Wendo Masumbuko's funeral, though other cyclists rode via Kisumu.

I decided to challenge myself on this very route and do a number of experiments, from the lights to the power bank and more stuff.

The ride started on a hard note, fighting the cold, especially around the Limuru Flyover area. I struggled to keep my pace high because I was dealing with elevation gain as well as strong winds. I had to stop at the flyover for a cup of tea. Later on, I was able to get warm as I proceeded to Nakuru, where I took a quick breakfast.

Towards Ngata and Salgaa, and into the treacherous Sanchanguwan climb, I was able to find my sweet spot. I got to Mau Summit in good time, around 10 am, where I took a soda and bought some Patco for another treacherous climb on the way to Kericho, called Chepsir.

I was able to do it easily for the second time and didn't need to stop until past Kericho, at a place before the Muhoroni Junction, where I had lunch with Elvins, who had joined me from Kericho to cycle with me to Ahero.

I left Kisumu around 4:20 pm and struggled with the treacherous Kiboswa climb. After finishing the climb, I didn't stop until Chavakali, where I stopped for an early supper.

I made it to Kakamega by 8 pm, where I was received by Kakamega cyclists travelling to Nairobi for GNBR. I am thankful to everyone who rode with me virtually on X, WhatsApp and LocatoWeb, my live beacon service.

Unfortunately, I was not able to create content since my Insta360 broke down last year, and my iPhone has had a screen issue for the past two months. I just went with photos this time.
