We started the day heading out of Wrocław, the capital of Lower Silesia. It was surprisingly pleasant, they have a very advanced network of bike lanes and cycle paths and it wasn't a drag at all, in no time we were surrounded by cornfields. Outside the city there are greenways running parallel to the road, in perfect condition, which make riding a lot easier as well as much safer.
We knew it was going to be a fast, rolling day (the mountains started the next day), so we settled into cruising speed along the back roads and the tracks we came across along the way, always surrounded by farmland. We stopped in Strzelin for a coffee and a snack from the supermarket, and right on the way out of town we did the first climb of the day, which took us up to a small hill where we found Singletrack Strzelin, around 15 km of trails spread across five sections that a local riders' association has built together with the town council. We rode a bit of the S4 and the S5. It was one of the highlights of the day and of the trip.
We carried on through the green forests and reached Henryków Abbey, a Cistercian monastery that appears out of nowhere in the middle of the fields and is far bigger than you would expect. It was there, in 1270, that a monk wrote down the first sentence ever recorded in Polish. From there we headed to Ziębice, where we stopped for lunch. Ziębice is a charming historic town in Lower Silesia, renowned for its impressive medieval defense walls, iconic Town Hall, and the unique Silesian House Museum.
On the way out our luck changed and a few drops started to fall. We kept following the route without any problem, for now we were barely getting wet. The kilometres went by and the rain kept getting heavier, until we reached Kamieniec Ząbkowicki and decided to put the cameras away in bags because we were already getting soaked. We changed the route to reach the hotel as soon as possible: it was cold, we were soaked and we were hungry. We did a couple of road climbs where we pushed a bit (we still couldn't feel the kilometres in our legs, it was day 1) and we arrived at the hotel with a very welcome descent of about 5 km. It is always nice to finish the day going downhill. We slept at Pałac Ławica, a beautiful palace from the 19th century with Swiss architectural inspiration. They cooked us a great dinner and we went to bed.
