Hahnenklee-Bockswiese: Waldseebad Kuttelbacher Teich - Kranicher Teiche

This short circular walk starts in Bockswiese, one of the two districts of Hahnenklee-Bockswiese in the Upper Harz. It combines peaceful forest paths and historic mining ponds with several interesting local sights, making it a varied introduction to the landscape and heritage of the area.

The walk begins near the Kneipp facilities in Bockswiese. The local Kneipp wading pool is currently being rebuilt, providing a pleasant place to experience the traditional Kneipp method of walking barefoot through ice cold water. The facility is particularly attractive on a warm day and fits naturally into the health and recreation character of Hahnenklee-Bockswiese.

From Bockswiese, the route passes the Unterer Flößteich, the first of six historic ponds arranged as a cascade. These ponds are part of the extensive Upper Harz water-management system, in which water was collected and stored in a carefully connected series of reservoirs. The cascade illustrates how effectively the natural topography of the Harz was used to manage water and provide a reliable supply for the historic mining industry.

One of the more unusual sights along the route is the Bockswiese water wheel. The wheel recalls the importance of water power in the Upper Harz and illustrates on a small scale the technology that once played a central role in operating mining machinery. Together with the ponds and channels, it provides a tangible connection between the present-day recreational landscape and the area's mining history.

The trail then continues through the forest towards the Waldseebad. Along the way, a small outdoor exhibition devoted to Harz rocks and minerals can be found in the forest. The display introduces some of the characteristic rocks found in the Harz and adds a geological dimension to the walk. It is a simple but interesting stop, particularly because the surrounding landscape itself is the result of the region's complex geological history.

The route subsequently reaches the Kuttelbacher Teich or Hahnenkleer Waldseebad, a picturesque forest swimming lake surrounded by woodland. The natural setting makes it one of the area's attractive recreational spots during the warmer months. A newer addition is the “Harz Riviera” Beach Club, which gives the traditional forest swimming area a more contemporary holiday atmosphere, with a place to relax and enjoy the lakeside setting.

From the Waldseebad, the circular route continues towards the Kleiner Kranicher Teich and GRoßer Kranischer Teich, both historic ponds in the Upper Harz water-management landscape, which forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Mines of Rammelsberg, Historic Town of Goslar and Upper Harz Water Management System.” Surrounded by forest, the pond offers a particularly peaceful section of the walk. Its calm surface and the surrounding woodland make it a good example of how the historic mining infrastructure has become an integral part of the modern recreational landscape.

The return to Bockswiese completes the short circuit.
