It’s a chilly start to the ride today in the forest away from the sun feels like it’s about 10°. I’m heading in a different direction today. I’m heading east across towards the big wind turbines. I have ridden in that direction before but this is the first time on this trip.
So I did my obligatory trip to the bakery, bought what I needed, cut it up and added different fillings on each. One has peanut butter and strawberry jam, and the other two have strawberry jam with, don’t laugh too loud , Vegemite…. As Ted Lasso says, Bbq Sauce 😂
I just came down the first bit of single track, not very long, very steep and too easy to go fast but again, there’s a lot of leaf litter and also there is a bit of rock garden most the way down, but yeah, still very good. Off to a good start.
I’ve just come out of the forest and onto cultivated paddocks. They’ve been recently ploughed and there’s a lot of green shoots, and feeding on those shoots, three deer, a mother and two young. As soon as they saw me, they took off back into the forest, pretty cool.
Lots and lots of horses in this valley , people riding horses, and they don’t pick up after… 😳
I’m a bit surprised it’s not much as forested as over this side, so far it’s much more rural.
I’ve come across a group of six elderly women, they’re all nattering away, walking their dogs, all forms of poodle mixes,. none of the ladies heard my bell. I’ve stopped to taking photos and making notes and then they stopped and turned around, because dogs are doing poos. I’ll head off.
So far, this is definitely more a gravel or touring bike orientated route. I can only hope that not to much further on, I get back into the forest. There’ll be some fun to be had.
The last 5 km or so very spectacular, back into the forest and up quite high looking down in the ravine is Neuenbürg,it has a river running through the centre of it. Quite a contrast, I took a little video. I’m now back into the forest and about to descend, it’s not a single track,I It’s a walking trail but looks like it’s going to be fun. I’ll let you know when I get to the bottom.
That section lived up to what it was promising, it was excellent and very fast downhill, in between the rocks it was pretty smooth. The rocks certainly did test the limits of the Vecnum suspension stem. But it handled it admirably considering it’s a rigid fork.
I’ve been quite for awhile since dictating, but my breathing has been very loud on a 4 km climb. Again Komoot through in a stitch-up, an unachievable section which I had to detour because it was going to be 25% segment, and not on a recognisable trail. Anyway I had to double back and continue climbing on a different trail to escaped that really gnarly stitch up. I’m now absolutely drenched in perspiration just soaked, which is unusual given that the temperature is less only about 17°.
Since stopping to have lunch, this ride has just got better and better. Smooth flowing single track to two very steep and gnarly rocky descents which were beyond the limits of this suspension stem, but my hands survived the bike survived. The forest is magnificent.
I am 6 or 7 km from home. I’ve been quiet late, mainly because I’ve entered familiar territory where I’ve done a lot of riding. so it’s more than déjà vu it’s repeat. Not to say it isn’t nice, it is but more of the same thing.
I am looking forward to getting home. I am knackered, it’s a bit hard to tell how hard ride is when you’re not using a heart rate monitor, a power meter or cadence sensor. You’ll just have to trust me 😉
