Over the years I have driven past Stoke-sub-Hamdon's war memorial that is perched, via prominently, atop Ham Hill, saying to myself "One day I must have walk there." Well today was that day, and in the process I also discovered the marvellous landscape that is Ham Hill Country Park, a 390-acre open space located above the village of Stoke-sub-Hamdon in Somerset. Positioned on a prominent geology-rich plateau, the site combines rich history, wildlife habitats, and scenic views across the Somerset Levels and out towards the Mendip Hills.Alas, The hill is home to the quarry that produces the famous honey-gold Ham Hill limestone, used in local landmarks across Somerset and also Dorset. It is also an Iron Age hillfort—one of the largest in Britain—with visible earthworks and ramparts. GPS hiccupped a couple of times but you get the general idea of where we were.
