This part of the trip was actually planned to start on the night from Monday to Tuesday. But things did not work out so well. The most interesting boat tour that I had planned to participate in was "swimming with the humpback whales". It was scheduled on Monday. We went out on the boat and did some diving on the bayside of the reef to get used to the equipment. When we were about to leave the bay to get out into the open waters where the whales are migrating the pilot of the spotter plane called the day off due to bad weather and low cloud ceiling. Everyone was pretty disappointed. I immediately talked to the organizers and reserved a spot on the next day available. That was Wednesday. Tuesday it was raining all day and based on the weather forecast I had already extended my stay anyway until Wednesday.
Everything worked out perfectly on Wednesday. The spotter plane found lots of whale pods migrating along the area where we could see them. There are certain requirements regarding the depth of the water etc. They cannot have baby whales in the pods either and the whales have to be calm.
Once suitable pods where found we were driven with the boat to the right spot and released into the water and had to line up. Our guide was equipped with a radio and he stood in contact with the drone pilot who directed us to the right spot.
Then came the moment when the whales passed us and dove under us. What impressive animals, what an experience!
We went on three dives and every time we saw more than one humpback whale.
Everybody was excited. At the end we were diving back in the bay to look at reef sharks.
This day was definitely worth the wait.
On Sunday I had already a dive tour for manta rays.
I was not clear about when to leave to proceed with my bike tour. I had planned to go to the next roadhouse 100 km away. Because I had a bad night sleep I decided to start early at 3.00 am. I arrived at the roadhouse at 8.00 am. The roadhouse was not very appealing so I decided to ride the 140 km to the next town.
The headwind reduced my speed significantly.
I am at 14.250 km, 900km to Perth!!!
