Tag 37: Bretagne 4 – Plage de Porh-Kerhouet nach Clohars-Carnoët

Frühstück am Strand, vor mir einer der zahlreichen bunt bemalten Betonklotz vom Atlantikwall, den die Deutschen im Zweiten Weltkrieg bauten, um eine Landung der Alliierten zu verhindern.

Überhaupt ist der Zweite Weltkrieg hier in der Bretagne sehr präsent. Mittags fahre ich durch Lorient, die größte deutsche U-Boot-Anlage in Frankreich. Wie in Saint-Nazaire haben die Bunker die Bomben ausgehalten, die Stadt nicht: fast 90 Prozent zerstört. Erobert wurde sie nie, der Kessel hielt bis zur Gesamtkapitulation im Mai 1945.

Persönlicher Rekord: dreimal an einem Tag mit einer Fähre übergesetzt. So viel habe ich nicht einmal vor zwei Jahren in Kroatien an einem Tag geschafft.

Bei einem Kaffee kommt mir ein Radreisender entgegen und sagt, der Teil der Bretagne nun vor mir werde landschaftlich immer reizvoller. Da wäre ich dankbar.

🇬🇧 Breakfast on the beach, in front of me a painted concrete block from the Atlantic Wall, built to stop an Allied landing. The war is everywhere in Brittany. Midday through Lorient, the largest German submarine complex in France. As in Saint-Nazaire the bunkers took the bombing and the town didn't: nearly 90 per cent of it destroyed. It was never captured — the pocket held until the general surrender in May 1945. I spend the rest of the day listening to podcasts about the occupation and the D-Day landings. Personal record: three ferry crossings in one day. Over coffee a cyclist coming the other way tells me the Brittany ahead of me only gets better. I'd be grateful for that. The light and the space were already enough today.
