Day 198 - Albanian Meadow - Deçan

Aujourd’hui c’est la petite route albanaise pour laquelle j’ai fait le détour, l’ayant vue recommandée par un autre cycliste. Et en effet je ne suis pas déçu ! Toute petite piste de 5m de large, une voiture toute les demi-heures, pas un mètre de plat ni de ligne droite, comme en témoignera la carte et le profil. Journée assez exigeante mais si belle, peut-être l’une des plus plaisantes depuis le début du voyage. Plus loin la rivière Valbonë et des canyons, je ne fais que monter et descendre dans des virages infinis.

Je comptais ensuite m’avancer dans la vallée et le parc national de Valbonë, petite pépite dont j’ignorais l’existence pour aller randonner dans un beau décor alpin, mais la météo m’en empêche. Un gros orage et 50mm de pluie sont annoncés cette nuit et demain… inutile d’aller randonner. Je dévie donc à contre-cœur et retourne au Kosovo avec l’idée de faire la même montagne, Zla Kolata depuis le côté monténégrin.

Pour l’instant c’est l’arrivée sur les Champs dans une petite boulangerie kosovare, d’aucuns disent qu’on m’aurait vu m’écrire au troisième passage rue Lepic et sur la ligne d’arrivée. Qu’est-ce que j’aime cette course ! Rdv 2027 pour un 6e de Pogi. Puis cherche un camp en bord de rivière quand deux hommes qui discutaient dans le noir me demandent ce que je cherche puis m’offrent une bière, allez c’est pas tous les jours dimanche. De fil en aiguille je suis invité chez l’un d’eux ! On parle allemand comme il a vécu là-bas. Grand luxe pour ce soir et tant mieux ! Le déluge s’annonce coriace.

Today was the little Albanian road I’d made the detour for after seeing another cyclist recommend it. And I wasn’t disappointed! A tiny road barely 5 meters wide, one car every half hour, not a single meter of flat or straight road, as the map and elevation profile will show. It was a fairly demanding day, but so beautiful—perhaps one of the most enjoyable since the start of the trip. Farther on came the Valbonë River and the canyons; all I did was climb and descend through endless bends.
I had planned to continue up the valley into Valbonë National Park, a little gem whose existence I hadn’t known about, and go hiking in a beautiful alpine setting. But the weather put a stop to that. A major thunderstorm and 50 mm of rain are forecast for tonight and tomorrow, so there’s no point in going hiking. Reluctantly, I changed course and headed back into Kosovo, with the idea of climbing the same mountain, Zla Kolata, from the Montenegrin side instead.
For now, though, it was my arrival on the Champs-Élysées—in a small Kosovar bakery. Some would say they saw me writing to myself on the third pass along Rue Lepic and on the finishing line. How I love this race! See you in 2027 for Pogi’s sixth.
Then I went looking for a campsite by the river when two men chatting in the dark asked what I was looking for and offered me a beer. Well, it’s not Sunday every day. One thing led to another, and I ended up being invited to one of their homes! We spoke German because he had lived there. Real luxury for tonight—and just as well, because the coming deluge looks like it’s going to be a serious one.
