Another early start this morning - and it was already incredibly warm at 5am! Thankfully, the reward for dragging myself out of bed before dawn was another spectacular sunrise over Besançon.
Today's adventure took me over three summits and past three historic forts, with views that just kept getting better. I climbed through the hills of Chaudanne, Rosemont and Planoise, exploring the impressive Fort de Chaudanne, Fort de Planoise and the Lunette des Trois-Châtels along the way.
Besançon's ring of forts was built to defend the city and forms part of an extensive military network surrounding Vauban's famous Citadel. Fort de Chaudanne, perched high above the Doubs, offers one of the best viewpoints back towards the old town, while Fort de Planoise sits at the highest point of the city's defensive belt. The Lunette des Trois-Châtels, a smaller defensive work dating from the late 18th century, guards the approach to the Citadel and gives stunning panoramic views over the city and river below.
As if the history and scenery weren't enough, I cane across the most adorable semi-feral mum with kittens, who absolutely made my day. 🐾
