The circular route around Melilla offers a unique combination of coastal scenery, historical context, and views of the surrounding North African landscape. Located on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, Melilla is one of Spain's two autonomous cities on the African continent. Its strategic position has shaped its history for centuries. Originally settled by Phoenicians and later influenced by Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic cultures, the city was occupied by Spain in 1497 and has remained under Spanish administration ever since. Today, Melilla combines European and North African influences, reflected in its architecture, culture, and urban landscape.

The route begins in the city and initially follows the Mediterranean coastline. After approximately 700 metres, it reaches Playa de los Cárabos, one of Melilla's central beaches. With its golden sand and views across the Mediterranean Sea, the beach provides an attractive introduction to the coastal character of the city.

Continuing along the shoreline, the route passes Playa de la Hípica. Located near the southern edge of the urban area, this beach marks the transition from the densely populated waterfront to the more open landscapes surrounding the city.

Leaving the coast behind, the route continues through the outskirts of Melilla and gradually enters the rolling terrain that surrounds the Spanish enclave. This section offers a different perspective on the city, highlighting its unique geographical setting between the Mediterranean Sea and the hills of northern Morocco. Along the way, views frequently open towards the fortified old town, the modern urban districts, and the border region that defines much of Melilla's contemporary identity.

As the route gains elevation, it reaches the Mirador del Barranco del Quemadero after approximately 15.4 kilometres. This viewpoint overlooks a rugged landscape of dry valleys and hills characteristic of the region. From here, hikers can appreciate the contrast between the urban environment of Melilla, the Mediterranean coastline, and the inland terrain extending towards the Rif Mountains. The viewpoint provides one of the best opportunities along the route to understand the geographical context of the city and its position on the African continent.

The route continues through open countryside before reaching the Fuente del Bombillo. This small spring and resting area offers a welcome stop before the final kilometres back to the city. The surrounding landscape is characterised by sparse vegetation, dry riverbeds, and wide views across the region, reflecting the semi-arid climate of northern Morocco.

Returning to Melilla, the route once again highlights the city's distinctive character. Few places in Europe offer the opportunity to combine Mediterranean beaches, North African landscapes, and centuries of military and cultural history within a single circular walk. The contrast between coast, countryside, and urban heritage makes this route a particularly interesting way to explore one of Spain's most unusual territories.
