Štrbské Pleso Railway Station

Highlight • Rest Area

The rack railway takes you into the valley. There is also a line that runs along the mountains at the height of the town: the Poprad–Štrbské Pleso line of the Tatra Electric Railway.
In winter, the railway is often used to get to the nearby ski resorts. The price of a journey depends on the length of the journey. There are also cheap time tickets.
The rack railway was opened in 1896. 4.05 km of the total 4.75 km route was equipped with a Riggenbach rack to overcome the maximum gradient of 127 ‰. From the old valley station in Štrba at an altitude of around 896 m to the final station at the lake at an altitude of 1350 m, a height difference of 454 m had to be overcome. During the Great Depression, traffic on the rack railway was stopped in 1932.
In 1968, in connection with the 1970 Nordic World Ski Championships in Štrbské Pleso, planning began for a new construction of the track, known as Zubačka for short. The maximum gradient was increased to 150 ‰.
The track was modernized from 2020 to 2022.

5.22 km

It is located in the Mengusovská dolina valley (Mengsdorf Valley) and its height is 1494 m above sea level. Its area is 6.87 hectares, it measures about 380 × 250 m and is up to 17.6 m deep. The lake is home to native brown trout. The only surface tributary is the Ľadový potok (Eisbach) in the east, the only outflow is the Krupá in the south, which further downstream joins the Hincov potok to form the Poprad River. The lake is frozen over on average from around mid-November to mid-May. There are two mountain huts on the northern shore of the lake, the Majláthova chata (Majláthhütte) and the Chata pri Popradskom plese (lit. Hut on Lake Popper).
