A valley and fell crossing from Ennerdale to Borrowdale, with a remote mid-stage stop at Black Sail YHA.
The first 10km follow the Ennerdale lakeshore path, which is rocky and uneven making it slow going when wet. This is followed by a forest section on easier gravel tracks: lush, green and atmospheric in low cloud. There is a high variant via Red Pike which adds significant elevation, but is a worthwhile adventure in good conditions.
You’ll pass the iconic Black Sail Youth Hostel before the main ascent up Loft Beck - well worth a stop here, particularly if the weather’s bad, as there’s an honesty café so bring some cash.
Loft Beck is steep but not too difficult thanks to stone pitching, and the valley mostly shelters from the wind before reaching the open summit. On a clear day you’ll have great views down into Buttermere and across to the neighbouring higher fells.
From here it’s downhill on mostly stony paths, arriving at Honister Slate Mine before a final descent into Rosthwaite alongside the famous Honister Pass.
📍Start: Ennerdale Bridge (Bank House Farm) 📍End: Rosthwaite (Royal Oak)
