Rennsteig Trailhead Hörschel

Highlight • Trail

The start of the Rennsteig is somewhat hidden on the banks of the Werra. Access is through the courtyard of the small restaurant "Tor zum Rennsteig". This is open daily (except Tuesdays) from 11 a.m. You can stock up on drinks there if you need them - there are no places to buy drinks along the way until you reach Hohe Sonne.

There is also a small guesthouse here. I cannot give a review as I have never slept there myself. More information at: rennsteig-beginn.de.

The Creuzburg was one of the residence places of the Ludowinger and preferred residence of the landgrave Elisabeth of Thuringia, who became the German "national saint" of the Middle Ages as Saint Elisabeth. She also gave birth to her son Hermann in 1222 at the castle.
