A decent workout; climbing up from Ashwell, my heart rate was over 170 most of the way up.

It's a long way up, especially on a loaded bike. Hard terrain and probably worth going that little bit further north to reach the Icknield Way access from the main road.

Climbing up from Royston is a decent workout, never done the opposite way but that would be quick descent.
