The former Cistercian monastery was founded in the mid-12th century. Worth seeing are the interior of the church as well as the cloister from the 13th century and the vinotheque.

This pretty little chapel is perfect for a break. A plaque tells you more about the history of the place of worship.

Trail Reviews

Thomas Wehr
June 26, 2021, Europ. Kulturweg Bronnbach/Hoehefeld – Vom Burgensaal zum Klosterglanz – Beim Hollebaum und Pfeiferhans

At the start of the Bronnbach Monastery, we will guide you along the Bronnbach Monastery Landscape Path. Here you can see how much the monastery rule has influenced today's landscape over centuries through viticulture, irrigation and sheep breeding. At the fork in the road you can decide whether to go back to Bronnbach (2 km) or 6 km in the direction of Höhefeld. Now comes the Pülversloch station, where you can learn about historical demarcations, cattle drives and barrows. The Wertheim district of Höhefeld is »Auf der Höhe«, from which the Neuberg offers a panoramic view of the Taubertal. Looking in the opposite direction, you can see the peaks of the Spessart in the background and, in front of it, the Höhefelder cultural landscape, which, with Hollebaum and pond, tells of the work of the fairytale figure Frau Holle. After a 2 km descent you come to the village of Hans Böhm, the whistler of Niklashausen. A museum and a local circular route are dedicated to him, the peasant revolutionary of 1476. You cross the Tauber, pass below the train stop and after 2 km turn off just before the Gamburg, which is worth a visit with its unique medieval wall paintings and the baroque castle park (see photo below). After crossing the idyllic, formerly Kurmainzian chamber forest, after 4 km it goes down to Gamburg to the "Gamburger Mäuschen". These were pumice stones that were in demand all over the world in the 20th century. Through the village of Gamburg you reach the train station and now you have the choice: return by train or walk 5 km to Bronnbach. Copyright: https://www.spessartprojekt.de/

Very nice tour over the heights of the Taubertal. Again and again you have wonderful views, along the route you will find some cultural sights. The route is very well signposted.

This tour had been planned for a while, and now we set off in the best weather to the famous, lovely Tauber Valley. To be more precise, to Gamburg train station, where the hike starts and ends. From the train station, it doesn't take long at all to reach the really beautiful Tauber. From a bridge, you can also see Gamburg Castle in the distance. A few meters later, things get adventurous, because the path is barely visible in places because the greenery is waist-high. But it is a signposted path, so keep going and go uphill a little to warm up. Some of the paths on the circuit I think were once paths through vineyards. You can see these typical walls in many places. At one point, this suspicion was actually confirmed by a sign. I somehow like these abandoned vineyards and orchards and the paths there. I have seen them on many tours now. There's something about it! You can easily follow the signs of the cultural trail for almost the entire circuit. That's what I call properly signposted! When the burial mounds were signposted, we took a detour, but unfortunately didn't find them. Instead, we went to the dilapidated Maria Hilf Chapel. It urgently needs renovation! We continued walking between fields in the direction of Gromburg Castle. The view stretches far into the country on this section. Everything is so wonderfully green, I love it! There is a short detour to the castle, but it is worth it. There is an entrance fee for the castle and somehow it seemed closed that day anyway. So we only had a quick look around and then returned to the route. None of us had ever seen a stag beetle before, but today a stately specimen crossed our path. They are amazing, they are big! But also so beautiful! We went through a tunnel back to the Tauber, where we had a short rest and put our feet in the water. A beautiful place, although well visited. Continuing upwards, you soon reach Begharden Cave. A hermit monk is said to have lived there around 1476. Very cool that you can go into the cave! And then it goes uphill! About 2 km long. On a fantastic path, but still *ouch*. When you finally get to the top, the route leads through a small town and then back into forest and fields. There was the usual half-time break at a rest area before the second half of the round began. Unfortunately, there was hardly anything else to see on the route on this part. The paths are a dream throughout: green, wooded, narrow, wild, bumpy, then another idyllic hiking trail, everything you like. And the landscape deserves a grade of 1 with a star anyway. You can't get enough of it. But apart from that, the second half hardly offers anything worth seeing, which is why it dragged on quite a bit. There is a pretty wave lounger on the Dickbuckel and there are also two other chapels along the way. Shortly before the end of the tour you also get to the really cool hut at Hahnenberglegraben. But there are loooong kilometers in between. We walked past the turnoff for the descent towards the train station. You can hardly see the start of the path from the path. And the path looks like the wild path at the start of the tour: steep, wild, overgrown. This is how you get back to the train station, where we realized that it would be almost 2 hours to get to the train back home. So we drove in the opposite direction and basically caught up with our train several stations earlier. Better than sitting at the station for so long.
