Highlight • Settlement

Elkeringhausen is a pretty, small place in the sunny valley of the Winterberg mountains. At least that is how the Elkering houses themselves describe their lovingly prepared village. Here you …

You should definitely take a nice rest here (if the rest area is free) - in the middle of the forest, directly before the "final climb" before Küstelberg, it is simply a beautiful place.

Trail Reviews

Michael Z
August 8, 2022, Von Elkeringhausen zum Gipfelkreuz Alte Grimme

It was a few meters up to the cross, but the descent was very steep down the slope. However, the view from the cross is priceless. The largest part of the trail was the Winterberger Hochtour trail.

It was a challenging hiking trail. The "Alte Grimmen" (750 m above sea level) is Elkeringhausen's local mountain. The trail mostly leads through the forests. But we were still able to enjoy wide views in some places. We were lucky with the weather 🌤️ Our reward was at the top of the summit cross with the magnificent view over Elkeringhausen to Winterberg ♥️ So beautiful!

In Elkeringhausen we first went to the spa gardens and the playground, then started the hike over the Alte Grimme. First through the village, then along forest paths until we came to a narrow path that led us through the forest to a saddle between the Rösberg and the Alte Grimme. Here we took a short break on a bench and then walked back along the forest path to the summit of the Alte Grimme. There is a shelter hut, a large cross and two benches from which you have a great view down into the valley. The rest of the path initially leads somewhat steeply and slipperily through the forest on the other side; in descriptions it is described as alpine, which I think is a bit exaggerated. The steepest part is made easier by a chain. Then we continued along forest paths until the path to the Elend mine branches off to the right. We took a quick look at the entrance to the old mine and after a short while turned back onto a forest path that took us down into the Orketal. Through this valley on an asphalt road back to Elkeringhausen.

Sunny round trip to the Alte Grimme ⛰️ Nice final tour of our hiking weekend🌞

After the Iron Lake Challenge and a rest day, I went to Elkeringhausen today. The tour to the Alte Grimme had been on my to-do list for a while and while it was very drizzly in many places in the Sauerland, it was fortunately dry here. It started in the middle of the village (where you can park for free) and then headed north out of the village. I then continued uphill on the Höhenflug feeder road - it was quite steep at times - all the way to the top of the Alte Grimme and the St. Bonifatiuskreuz at 751 m. Unfortunately there were no views here as everything was covered in clouds. But since I really like foggy atmospheres, the rest of the way was beautiful. 🤗 The descent via the Kettensteig was again very steep and in places very slippery due to the damp ground. It was a path between the trees, at the end of which a steel chain had been attached to hold on to. The rest of the way led past the Elend mine tunnel. It is stated that entering the tunnel is at your own risk, but with the access blocked off, that is difficult. 😉 Down in the valley I arrived at the memorial site of the Wernsdorf church and followed the Orke back to Elkeringhausen. The Sunday tour was worth it, a beautiful area with lots of intact forest. 🤗

The descent from the castle is not visible after tree felling work
